Dr Carolyn Clevenger is a gerontological nurse practitioner and a professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the Gerontological Society of America, and the American Academy of Nursing. Her research focuses on the geriatric nurse practitioner workforce, psychoeducation programmes for dementia family caregivers and new models of care. read more
Dr Clevenger is the founder and director of the Emory Integrated Memory Care (IMC) Clinic. The IMC Clinic is a nurse-led primary care practice for people living with dementia, with the IMC in Community model also available in select senior living communities. This new model of care has been recognized as a Patient-Centred Medical Home, an Age Friendly Health System, a Best Practice exemplar for patient- and family-centred care, and one of the Best Programs for Caregiving.
Dr Clevenger has led or collaborated on a variety of psychoeducation programmes for dementia family caregivers including the Savvy Caregiver® Program and Tele-Savvy Caregiver, Caregiving During Crisis, Caregiving While Black, and most recently, Caregiver as Navigator.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University, her Master of Science in Nursing from Emory University, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the Medical College of Georgia. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

In midlife, she received her Master of Divinity degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary and served as an ordained United Church of Christ pastor, chaplain and spiritual director. She spent fifteen years as the care partner for her husband, Bill, as he navigated Alzheimer’s disease with severe agitation.
